About Us

A NASA-funded program, SEEDS Scholars is an in-service teacher training and student training program administered by the NHU Foundation at the Latino College Preparatory Academy of the East Side Union High School District in San Jose, CA. The program seeks to change the paradigm of science education to English Language Learners (ELL) by developing a curriculum that incorporates the variables influencing teaching and learning for this student population. These variables are: teacher characteristics, parental involvement, informal learning opportunities, and academic English literacy.

Vision:

Shift the paradigm of science education by implementing a self-sustaining program that acknowledges and involves parents, teachers, NASA Ames scientists and researchers, the local community, and high school students as stakeholders in the development of the future STEM workforce.

Objectives:

  1. Increase the science, mathematics, and English skills of low-income ELL Hispanic students through a teacher training program that uses NASA resources;
  2. Develop, promote, or utilize new and innovative, and replicable approaches to improving STEM learning and instruction;
  3. Provide experiences and activities that are grounded in education research or use evidence-supported approaches, techniques and tools;
  4. Build linkages and connection to and from secondary education and higher education;
  5. Provide experiences and training that improve educators’ abilities to engage their students and enhance student learning.
